Standing still is not an option

Standing still is not an option for communications and public relations professionals. Continuing professional development is essential for all of us to remain relevant and up to date with the many technological and philosophical changes our industry faces.

The courses and webinars PRINZ offers around the country have to be right up there too. Not just in their content, but also in the way they are structured and their relevance to employers. This year, we’re offering over 40 courses to members and so far, mid-way through the year, we’ve had more than 200 people attending. Last year, our courses were attended by over 500 people, which we think is a positive indication we’re meeting a need. But we can’t “stand still”. We need to keep up with the latest international professional development trends and look at what will work best here in New Zealand.

In some countries, public relations and communications professionals are able to study for and achieve chartered status, an internationally recognised mark of professional competency. Is this something we should be considering for New Zealand? Currently, members can attain accredited status through APR – a popular and effective process that has so far seen over 350 practitioners achieve the APR qualification. But it’s a status that isn’t widely known or understood by employers and clients. Would an internationally recognised chartered status make any difference?

In addition to APR, members can also design their own development programme by gaining RIVER points towards an annual practising certificate. Feedback from some members indicates the RIVER system doesn’t work for them, so we need to take this on board and perhaps find a better way.

These are some of the considerations the National Council will be looking at in coming months and then consulting with all of you about your preferences. Because standing still is not an option for any of us if we want to remain relevant, and have our qualifications recognised by those outside the profession.

Showcasing our best work

Earlier this week, the Northern Division held a PRINZ Awards showcase event ‘Can I get my Oscar now?’ with Rachel Hughes, Communications Manager, Watercare Services, Sara Cairney, Communications Lead, Auckland Council, and Kate Porter, National Communications & Public Affairs Manager, Countdown presenting their PRINZ award winning campaigns and projects. For those of you who were unable to make it to the Auckland event, you can watch the video here.

Now in its 44th year, the PRINZ Awards are an opportunity for us to be recognised by our peers, organisations and clients – and for us as an industry to demonstrate the value we bring to our communities. The campaigns and projects entered in the Awards provide inspiration for others in the industry and I am pleased to announce that this year’s PRINZ Awards Finalists case study booklet is now available. This is a great resource for anyone in the industry.

We are also planning a webinar with our PRINZ Supreme Award Winner, the Department of Internal Affairs, on its entry ‘He Tohu Exhibition’ a campaign to re-house New Zealand’s iconic constitutional documents. More details will be published on our Webinar page next week.

Our Chief Judge, Lisa Finucane FPRINZ, is stepping down and I’d like to thank her for her tireless work over the past three years in the role – particularly for her enthusiasm in corralling our volunteer judging teams and her ongoing commitment to incrementally improving the awards each year. Kate Woodruffe FPRINZ will take up the role of Chief Judge in 2018.

NSPR appoints two new directors in growth phase 

NSPR Limited is delighted to announce the appointment of two new directors, Lynda Millward and Kate Barron, in what managing director Niki Schuck calls an investment in the future. Niki Schuck PR was established in 2008, with Schuck deciding to rebrand to NSPR Limited in 2017, in a deliberate move that signalled it was no longer about her.
