"The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place". So said the author George Bernard Shaw and his observation still holds true today - particularly when it comes to employee communication.
Many organisations now understand the importance of an effective internal communications strategy. They understand that a clear strategy, tied to business outcomes, avoids complacency, confusion and compromise. Often, as organisations grow in size, internal communication becomes an ad-hoc mix of approaches developed over time, with channels stagnating and employees swamped with information that hinders rather than helps - without a clear strategy, time and resources are wasted and employee relationships suffer.
This session looks at the critical components of an internal communications strategy, takes delegates through the seven steps of strategic planning and how to evaluate progress once the strategy has been implemented. It also delves into change communication, digs into the real meaning of employee engagement and looks at the rapidly evolving internal communications environment.

Catherine Arrow, FPRINZ, FCIPR, Chart.PR
Catherine Arrow is an international public relations consultant, educator and writer. She heads Unlocked PR, digital consultancy Social Capture and designs and delivers professional training and development programmes for fellow professionals. A PRINZ Fellow, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and a Chartered Public Relations Practitioner, Catherine serves on the Global Alliance Advisory Council following eight years of service as board member and secretary of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management.
Alongside her own consultancy work, she lectures and speaks about public relations in New Zealand and around the world. Recent publications include a chapter on future public relations practice in the CIPR book, ‘Lessons from Expert Practitioners’. Her career spans the Northern and Southern Hemispheres and, in 2012, was presented with the PRINZ President’s Award for exemplary contribution to the profession.
