Global Alliance Update

Fiona Cassidy, Global Alliace Board Member

At the Global Alliance AGM recently held in New York, José Manuel Velasco from Spain was elected as the New Chair. José Manuel is very focussed on the continued professional development of our industry. He is looking to build on the good work of previous Chair Gregor Halff to grow the membership of the Global Alliance.

The three major activities the Global Alliance is focussing on for the next year are the ASEAN PR Regional Conference in September, continuing work on the Global Capabilities Framework, and the World Public Relations Conference to be held in Norway from 22-24 April 2018.

For the first time an ASEAN regional conference will be held in Bali from 20-23 September 2017. Prita Kemal Gani, APRN President and a Global Alliance Board member, has put together an exciting programme that seeks to address a number of key themes. These include ASEAN’s identity in the global community, cross-cultural communication, particularly among Millennials, challenges presented by the rise of mobile communications and social media and the role of PR in promoting harmony and preventing conflict.

The line-up of national and international speakers is impressive and the conference looks like a great one to attend. I am lucky to be part of a team running a one-day Association workshop with different country attendees. For more information click here.

The second major activity that is well underway is the phase two research related to the Global Capabilities Framework.

In terms of background, the impetus for the research came from Global Alliance members (professional associations) who wanted a global reference point from which to benchmark professional requirements for their own qualifications, for use by individual members, to develop academic curricula and for use by employers.

The end product will be a Capability Framework which will comprise of a core that will be useful for all those constituents, enhanced by regional variations which are appropriate to the particular contexts and cultures of regions and countries around the world. It’s on track to be presented at the World Public Relations Forum in Norway next April.

Norway is hosting the World Public Relations Forum from 22-24 April and planning is well underway. The call for abstracts and papers has just gone out so if you are interested, check out Lots more to come on this and definitely worth putting in your diary.

In case you didn’t know Global Alliance Board Members are writing a think piece each month under the headingThoughts. I am up in September and looking for a NZ idea to write about – let me know.

The next year for the Global Alliance is already shaping up to be a busy one and it is great that we at PRINZ are valued on the international stage.
