PRINZ Fellow Bruce Rogers passes

One of the "old hands" of public relations, Bruce Rogers, died in Auckland late in February of cancer after a career spanning more than 50 years in journalism and public relations, working in Canada, New Zealand and, for a short period, in Dubai.

Bruce began his career as a cadet with the New Zealand Herald in 1963, working on several other daily newspapers and spending a number of years in Canada editing business magazines and travelling widely on the North American continent.

Back in New Zealand he joined the Auckland consultancy which became Allan Fenwick McCully before moving to Fletcher Challenge, where he became public relations manager with widely divergent responsibilities including production of annual reports and other financial documents for the company, covering several countries in which FCL had investments, and helping build the Fletcher Marathon in Rotorua into an international event and the largest participatory athletic event in New Zealand.

In 1990 he rejoined the consultancy world with Phoenix Public Relations in Auckland, where he progressively became a shareholder, director, managing director and the largest single shareholder at the time the consultancy merged with the Australian-owned Professional Public Relations. In his professional career Bruce handled many large projects, earning a reputation for absolute professionalism and attention to detail and high standards, winning many national and international awards.

He was an active member of PRINZ, a Fellow, and wrote the New Zealand content of a Trans Tasman manual on public relations which has been sold in 35 countries. Following his retirement several years ago, Bruce stayed busy mentoring younger people in their public relations careers and doing project and pro-bono work. He was 69, widely respected and admired in the Auckland PR community and sadly missed by his wife Sue, children and grandchildren.
