PRINZ's Role

PRINZ helps potential clients and employers of public relations practitioners by identifying the professional nature of an individual's involvement in public relations and adherence to a strict PRINZ Code of Ethics. A guide to New Zealand consultancies is available to organisations seeking public relations services. Members who attain full accredited membership status are full time practitioners whose ability and experience has been endorsed by their peers.

Membership of PRINZ provides regular contact with other public relations people at luncheons, workshops and social gatherings. Each branch has its own programme and is firmly committed to providing members with opportunities to interact with other practitioners.

PRINZ is affiliated to other public relations groups and organisations around the world, providing an international network of contacts and a flow of information.

Membership

Today's public relations executives are drawn from a wide variety of disciplines. Journalism, advertising and marketing are common, but legal, financial, research and commercial backgrounds are becoming more frequent. This reflects a considerable broadening of the role and responsibilities of the public relations executive from the traditional journalistic base. The common denominator is a sound knowledge and understanding of the media; of communication techniques and of business affairs.

PRINZ's paid up membership (1,100 members at January 2007) comprises public relations professionals working in commerce and industry, consultancies, local and central government and other community or business organisations.

Global Alliance

PRINZ is a founding member of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management.

The Global Alliance is a framework for collaboration between national, regional and international public relations associations with a mission to enhance the public relations profession and its practitioners throughout the world.

The Alliance was formally established in Chicago, Illinois, USA, on 25 October, 2000, after a Public Relations World Congress sponsored by the Public Relations Society of America and the International Public Relations Association.

The Global Alliance is now firmly established as a permanent forum for discussing issues that affect our profession on a global scale. The strength truly is in our work but also in our numbers. With over 55 associations representing close to 150,000 members from around the world, a lot has already been achieved. Efforts to establish a global protocol on ethics are on track for full ratification by all members by the end of 2006. We have adopted a three year strategic planning plan which respects collective aspirations for the Alliance.

Structure

The Public Relations Institute of New Zealand is a non-profit, incorporated society. An honorary national executive comprising a national president, two vice presidents and division chairpeople directs the Institute's affairs through a permanent, professional Auckland-based executive office.

Divisions - Northern, Central, and Southern - all maintain a year-round programme of activities. PR practitioners outside these cities may become regional members, enjoying full membership benefits (including invitations to nearest city branch events). Regional members pay a reduced subscription which acknowledges the difficulty of attending city branch events.
