Contractors source work through new network
Communications contractors now have their own network to source new contracts.
The Contract Communicators Network (CCN) is an independent group of experienced public relations and communications professionals who will be promoting an alternative to the traditional HR consultancies contracting services model.
CCN Network Co-ordinator, Mark Hanson, says he wants to hear from communications contractors who are interested in joining the network to add to the foundation members.
“We are looking for what I call ‘genuine’ contractors – those who work for one client at a time in a full-time capacity as opposed to multi-client general consultancy,” says Hanson
“CCN members must be experienced PR/Comms operators who have had at least a decade in the profession and have been contracting for several years. We are pitching at the higher-end of the contracting market so that demands a certain level of experience and expertise.”
Hanson says there is no joining fee, as such, but on receiving an assignment the contractor will pay one-hour’s fees per week for the duration of the contract to help maintain and promote the network.
“We believe most contractors would be more than happy to pay, as an example, $80 an hour charge out rate, in order to secure a contract to receive $3200 per week from the client in fees.”
The CCN point of difference for the client is that they will not be hit with an HR consultancy commission ‘add-on’ to every hour of the contractor’s base rate.
Clients hiring a CCN contractor will pay an initial one-off engagement fee to CCN and then only the hourly rate which they negotiate directly with the contractor.
The client engages the contractor directly in a normal contract for services commercial arrangement with all the usual legal and contractual responsibilities and commitments that entails.
Hanson says over the course of a three-month contract the additional cost to the client of the HR consultancy’s commission added to the contractor’s hourly rate can be thousands of dollars.
