AUT students combat the pitfalls of social media

Pavel Zivnustka, Publicity manager, Club PR

Instead of posting photos of drunken nights on their Facebook pages, AUT students will be posting shots of themselves with PR Recruitment Consultant, Michelle Boag, from a networking event held in central Auckland last Tuesday night.

Michelle warned the students that uploading one injudicious photo now could come back to haunt them, and potentially ruin their career as a communications specialist advising others what to do or say.

"It may seem like a bit of a laugh now - it could be disastrous in 20 years time when you are at the top," she says.

As members of AUT's Club PR, the students hosted Michelle Boag and 68 PR professionals, lecturers and their classmates at the swish ST PAUL St Gallery for the Nostalgic Alumni Reunion Evening.

The attendees were reminded that a career and good reputation built over many years can be lost by one, seemingly innocent, comment on Facebook.

“Students can often forget that their lives online can have harsh implications on their real lives,” says Naomi Ball, President of Club PR.

Club PR students are working to shape their ‘brands’, and develop a strong reputation for their future careers by learning from industry professionals.

The club organises regular networking events, such as this, throughout the year

The Alumni Reunion was organized with the help of grants from AUT, alongside sponsorship from the ST PAUL St Gallery, DB Breweries, Soljans Estate and OfficeMax.
